Week 2: Our first meeting with Huang Ayi

Updated: Dec 15, 2020

Participants: Cleaning lady Huang Jiuhong Ayi, Manager Ms. Wang and Emily, Kevin, & Prismo, and Chunhao from CEL Office

Time: 4pm to 4:15pm Sept. 21.

Purpose: meet with community partners and establish preliminary understanding of the community partner’s needs.

What I learned about the community partner:

  • Huang Ayi has worked at NYUSH for 6 years and she enjoys the working atmosphere here because teachers and students all show great respect to her.

  • She is a really kind person who owns a bubbly personality. She greeted us enthusiastically and let us sit down first before sitting down herself.

  • When we asked about if there were any problems she had met in her working process, she emphasized that everything is fine.

  • She introduced the different tools used in her work, including wiping cloth, mop & bucket and the scrapes for cleaning the mirror in the dance studio.

  • She mentioned that teachers are making inventions like recycled plastic benches to improve her working experiences and environment.

  • She takes great pleasure in her work when she encounters a problem or challenge and solves it by using her own thinking and creativity.

  • When asked what are some difficulties in her work, she said no at the beginning. When asked again, she said mopping the floor is the most challenging due to the heaviness of the bucket.

What else happened at the meeting? What did you notice?

  • We started a Wechat group and added Huang Ayi & teacher Chunhao in. We will reach out to them to learn more about Huang Ayi’s work and discuss further steps.

  • We visited Huang Ayi’s workroom and found it kind of narrow in width.

  • We took a good look at the tool she used for cleaning and noticed some room for improvement for the mop and bucket.

What I would like to learn more about and how to find out?

  • Details like the scope and procedure of her work: what's her daily routine? how many classrooms does she cover? How long is her shift? What does she do for different hours of the shift?

  • About working condition: how does she use these tools? Are there any other problems she meets in the process of working?

  • What would be a better place for further meetings? A place where makes Huang Ayi feels more comfortable and free to talk.

What would I do to find out about these questions?

  • Try Huang Ayi's role. Use the tools she used and do the same cleaning work as she did. To feel about her experiences.

  • Deeper communication with Huang Ayi.
